Chris Bailey Head Instructor

Chris began his martial journey when he was 12, starting with wrestling. As a college student in the early 1980’s, he began studying Hwa Rang Do. After nearly 10 years of intensive training, he received his black belt from Grand Master Dr. Joo Bang Lee in 1994.  He currently holds a 3rd degree black belt in Hwa Rang Do.  After a number of fights over the years, Chris realized that most techniques taught in traditional martial arts were not effective in real street fights. Soon thereafter, he retired his black belt in Hwa Rang Do and started searching for something more effective.

In early 2007, Chris ventured to the Gracie world headquarters in Torrance, CA and began his journey with the Gracie family. After being fully exposed to the simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Chris stopped training in other martial arts altogether, and dedicated all of his efforts to learning the Gracie Way.  Seeing his dedication and potential, his teacher, Ryron Gracie, recruited Chris into the Instructor Certification Program, held at the Gracie Academy. Chris has been involved in the ICP since 2008.

Chris graduated from the Gracie Academy and has focused 100% of his time and energy on learning and teaching Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.  Chris has been teaching martial arts for over 25 years and currently teaches full time at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Scottsdale and also teaches law enforcement on a regular basis. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Northern Arizona University (1988) and began working on his Master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1990. Chris is also a Master Reiki teacher and healer.
